Martha Castex-Tatum is more than just Houston’s Mayor Pro Tem and City Councilmember for District K—she’s a passionate advocate for her community and a visionary leader shaping the city’s future. Whether it’s improving public safety, beautifying our communities, or making sure District K gets the resources it deserves, Martha is at the forefront of efforts to make Houston a better place for everyone.

As Mayor Pro Tem, Martha works every day to ensure that the voices of her constituents are heard, and their needs are met. From transportation and infrastructure improvements to community empowerment and economic development, Martha is constantly working to make life better for Houstonians.

Beyond her work in Houston, Martha’s leadership extends far and wide. She’s recently been appointed Chair of the National League of Cities (NLC) 2025 Information Technology and Communications Federal Advocacy Committee, where she’ll help shape the national conversation around important issues like broadband access, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence. In this role, Martha will play a key part in guiding NLC’s efforts to advocate for cities and local governments across the country.

Martha’s influence doesn’t stop there. She was also elected to the National League of Cities (NLC) Board of Directors during the 2024 City Summit in Tampa, Florida. This election by her peers speaks to her strong leadership and commitment to serving not only Houston but cities nationwide. As a Board member, she’ll help steer federal advocacy, governance, and membership initiatives that directly impact local communities.

As Chair of the Economic Development Committee, she provides oversight of economic incentives, and policies that drive tourism, growth, workforce development, and job creation. She is committed to fostering sustainable economic expansion, attracting investment, and ensuring equitable opportunities for all Houstonians. Martha is also a member of the Budget and Fiscal Affairs, Ethics and Governance, Labor, and Proposition A committees.

Martha Castex-Tatum’s leadership isn’t just about holding positions -- it’s about making a real difference, whether it’s right here in District K or on a national stage. Martha is committed to restoring people’s faith in government through responsive leadership and meaningful engagement.

Martha is a Leadership Houston Class XXXVI graduate, a life member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and a member of the Missouri City Chapter of Links, Inc. She holds a Master of Public Administration and a Bachelor of Business Administration from Texas State University. Beyond her impressive professional journey, Martha is the proud mother of one son, Jacob Paul Tatum.
